Going Back to School: Set Your Child Up to Feel Safe

The first days back can bring new routines, new faces, and some uncertainty. Our kids Jiu Jitsu program, we prepare children to feel secure—both in the classroom and on the mat. We use these BJJ-inspired steps to build calm confidence before school starts.
Why BJJ helps: children practice how to handle discomfort and uncertainty in a structured, supportive environment. They learn that feeling nervous is normal—and they can still stay respectful, focused, and in control.
Confidence Routine (Morning + Transition)**
Choose a “ready phrase” (e.g., “Breathe, then try.”)
Practice slow breathing for 30–60 seconds
Review the day’s first goal: “arrive, be respectful”
Use a short movement cue (stretch/stand tall)
End with a calm check-in: “I can handle this.”
Calm Mindset for Stress**
Teach “pause before reacting” during school changes
Name feelings: “I’m uncomfortable / I’m okay”
Practice a reset plan: breathe → think → act
Reinforce effort with process words, not outcomes
Remind them discomfort can become skill.
Respectful Conduct (BJJ Values Applied at School)**
Follow directions the first time (same rule as class)
Use safe, respectful communication with classmates
Practice “ask first” instead of grabbing or arguing
Treat teachers and peers with control and kindness
Celebrate good sportsmanship: “help, don’t hurt.”
